MELVILLE-L@us.edu.pl is an integral part of the Virtual Center for Melville Studies (www.melville.pl). With the launch of this service scholars interested centrally or marginally in Melville receive another of a series of versatile tools for communication, complementig the resource center in the making. The idea of the Center is to promote Melville's oeuvre and Melville Studies world-wide, but also to provide space for those curious, but yet undecided, who might in time become deeply involved in Melville Studies and eventually become members of the Melville Society. In other words, one of the Center's goals is to promote the Melville Society internationally by encouraging interest in Melville through and opening space for those who, like many Ishmailites, participate in discussions but either do not wish to become Members of the Melville Society, or pop in to ask elementary questions. Also, it should be a space of responsible teaching and responsible answering even the most trivial questions concerning Melville that high school students and freshmen may ask. If we strive for sustained membership of the Melville Society in the future, we need to open space for inspiration. The MELVILLE-L listserve provides space for the non-members of the Melville Society as well as to those those who may eventually become members, but first have to become enamored of our beloved writer.
